Premier R.J. Simpson responds to Canada’s recognition of North Slave Métis Alliance rights

sharing on behalf of the GNWT

Yellowknife – February 28, 2026 - Premier R.J. Simpson issued the following statement today in response to Canada’s recognition of the section 35 rights of the North Slave Métis Alliance:

“The Government of the Northwest Territories welcomes Canada’s recognition of the section 35 rights of the North Slave Métis Alliance.

“Métis people have a long and important history in the North Slave region and across the Northwest Territories. This recognition reflects that history, and the voices of those who have worked for many years to be heard, including North Slave Métis Alliance members.

“Recognition matters. It is an important step toward reconciliation, and it underscores the importance of continued progress on the recognition and resolution of Indigenous rights and land claims across the Northwest Territories.

“Reconciliation is built through respectful relationships and ongoing dialogue. The GNWT remains committed to working constructively with the North Slave Métis Alliance, and with all Indigenous governments and organizations in the Northwest Territories. These relationships are complex, and they require care, respect, and continued engagement.

“The GNWT and the North Slave Métis Alliance have committed to working together in a manner that is grounded in mutual respect, recognition, responsibility, and reconciliation. This includes sharing information, finding common ground, and working side by side on issues that matter to people across the territory.

“Our approach in the Northwest Territories is grounded in collaborative governance. We may not agree on every issue, but we will continue to work together in good faith to strengthen relationships, improve decision-making, and support strong, healthy communities across the territory.

“I acknowledge the leadership of President Whitford and the North Slave Métis Alliance in reaching this milestone, and I look forward to continuing to work together in a respectful and constructive way.”
