Yesterday, the North Slave Métis Alliance and the Government of the Northwest Territories met for the first time under our recently signed Cooperation Agreement, marking a significant step towards reconciliation for our community. To us, this Agreement signifies our strong commitment to government to government collaboration and willingness to work together. We are proud to work alongside the GNWT on matters of shared concern in our territory, leading with mutual respect and responsibility. We look forward to building on this partnership with the Government and building a strong and resilient north.
The inaugural meeting under this agreement focused on continuing to share information and perspectives between the two governments, particularly on:
acknowledgement of the Aboriginal rights of Métis, including NSMA members, in the NWT;
confirmation of an ongoing relationship based on mutual respect, recognition, responsibility and reconciliation;
NSMA interest in engagement on projects of national interest; and
collaboration to address mental health and addictions issues including building awareness of public health issues, campaigns, and messaging.
