Call for Métis Artists

We are sharing this message on behalf of Northern Quill Publishing, a new NWT-based publishing company:
Northern Quill Publishing is looking to publish Treiva Plamandon’s children’s book, “Papa’s Magic Fiddle”, with an aim at having it on the shelves by 2026. As this beautiful work is about a young Métis girl and her relationship with her grandfather, it is Treiva and Northern Quill’s shared vision that the artist we find to illustrate the book will also be Métis, preferably from the NWT.
We would be looking to commission cover art and 13 illustrations for the book, anticipating these would be mostly in 8x8 format, with a few longer landscape (8x11) pages possible as well. Our vision is that the artist’s illustrations would have a measure of realism to the illustrations without losing the magic (for example, more like Chris Van Allsberg or Jan Brett than a Tomie dePaola or Eric Carle) but are open to considering all styles. We also have no preference to the medium that the artist uses; ultimately, we want readers to feel like the art appeals to them and that it complements the story.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please submit some sample work and a quote to produce the artwork to Trevia and Northern Quill at hello@northernquillpublishing.ca.
