This opportunity is specifically for youth living in Yellowknife, Ndilo, or Dettah
---
Project description:
The grant proposal is to fund a two-day workshop for Northwest Territories Indigenous youth to learn the basics of podcasting with a focus on being able to document environmental contaminant issues affecting traditional foods and water within their communities or regions.
Podcasting offers a format to convey information to a broad audience as well as collect information from numerous interviewees, Elders, harvesters, food preparers and those who are observing environmental changes. It is also a format that is easily available to tech-savvy youth, can be successfully done with a smart phone and need not be expensive to produce. The participants’ podcasts could create a lasting record of contaminant issues as they are today, capture views of community members and Elders and provide a baseline for future changes. Involvement in podcast production will also increase youths’ interest, awareness and knowledge in contaminant issues within their communities, water and traditional foods.
The skills that can be gained through a podcasting workshop are transferrable to an unending number of topics as well as may be a stepping stone to employment opportunities or life-long vocations.
