Introducing DriveNWT

Introducing DriveNWT, the territory’s new and improved highway conditions map

YELLOWKNIFE (August 28, 2024) – Planning travel just got easier with the launch of DriveNWT, a state-of-the-art highway map designed to enhance the safety, efficiency and sustainability of our transportation networks.

DriveNWT will provide residents, travelers, and industry with up-to-date, reliable information to inform their travel decisions. The platform replaces the previous Highway Conditions Map, offering a more modern and user-friendly experience. Whether you are at your computer or on your phone, DriveNWT aims to improve road safety and enhance the overall travel experience for all users by providing comprehensive and timely travel information.

Users will have access to more accurate and detailed updates on construction zones, weight restrictions, ferry and ice crossing status, advisories and road closures, and can also view current road and weather conditions from 12 new highway cameras.

Just as the traveling public can gather information to plan their trips, the data collected from this system will help the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) make more informed decisions. Twelve traffic counters are in place to count, classify and measure the speed of vehicular traffic passing along a roadway, and 12 roadbed thermistor arrays that are temperature sensors in place to monitor permafrost behavior and inform appropriate weight restrictions. The data collected through these devices will help the GNWT better plan and maintain our highways, helping improve our transportation systems for the future.
